Introduction
Wine Bag is a database program that allows you to store a list of your
favorite wines so that you may have this information when shopping, in a
restaurant or wherever you may need it.
You may enter the following information: year, winery,
varietal, rating (such as Wine Spectator), retail cost of a bottle, the region
and a short note.
Features include:
- Create as many files as you like
- Export your data to comma separated files (cvs) for importing
into a spreadsheet program on your desktop.
- Add, edit, delete and view individual entries
- Sort a list with up to three levels
- Filter a list with up to two levels
- Customize defaults to facilitate data entry
Opening a File
To open a file that you have already created select File/Open. Then tap on
the file you would like to load. All files have a sdf extension. A sample file (wine_sample.sdf)
is included with the program.
Creating a New File
To create a new file select New File from the File Menu. You will then be
asked to enter the name of your new file. Tap OK and you will be ready to input
data.
Exporting a File as CSV
You may export you data to a CSV file for importing into a spreadsheet
program on your desktop. This option will export whatever dataset you have currently
showing in the grid.
The resulting file will have a header row and then one line for each item.
For example:
Year,Winery,Varietal,Rating,Retail Cost,Region,Comments
1990,Hess,Chardonnay,90,20,Napa,
1992,Beaulieu, Merlot, 95, 30, Napa,
Importing a CSV File
If you would prefer to enter data into a CSV file on your desktop, you may
then import the data into your database. The file must have a header row and
each item must be separated by a comma.
Year,Winery,Varietal,Rating,Retail ost,Region,Comments
1990,Hess,Chardonnay,90,20,Napa,
1992,Beaulieu, Merlot, 95, 30, Napa,
If you are upgrading from The Winery, you can also use this function to
transfer data to Wine Bag. Using The Winery, load your file and then export it
as a CSV file. Transfer this file to your new device either by copying it to
your desktop and then your device using ActiveSync or by beaming it. Then using
Wine Bag, open or create a new file and then select File/Import to add your
data.
Adding a Record
To add a new record to your file select Add from the Data Menu.
To facilitate data entry, all of the fields with the exception of Comments
have a dropdown list from which you can pick. The information in the lists can
be customized to your own preferences under the Default Menu.
To add a record, select your information from the drop down lists, type in a
comment if you would like and tap on Add. Continue in this fashion until all
records are entered. Tap on Cancel to return to the main screen.
If the information for your wine is not displayed in the dropdown list, you can
switch to a text box for data entry by tapping the 'T' to the right of the drop
down list. Then enter whatever value you would like. If you change your mind,
tapping on 'C' will show the drop down list again.
The length of each field is limited to the following number of characters:
Year: 4
Winery: 30
Varietal: 30
Rating: 4
Retail: 4
Region: 30
Comment: 50
Editing a Record
To edit a particular record, highlight the entry in the grid and select Edit from the
Data Menu. Make your changes and tap OK. To exit without making a change, tap on
Cancel.
Deleting a Record
To delete a particular record, highlight the entry and select Delete from the
Data Menu. Tap YES to delete the record, NO to exit without deleting the record.
Viewing a Record
To view a particular record in full, highlight the entry and select View from
the Data Menu. When finished, tap on OK.
Sorting Data
You may sort your wine list on up to three fields. To sort, select Sort from
the Data Menu. Then pick the fields that you would liked sorted from the
dropdown lists. Tap OK to start the sort.
Filtering Data
You may also filter your data on up to two fields. Select the field from the
dropdown box and then enter the data that you are looking for. Again to
facilitate entering data, the filter looks for items that contains your search
string. For example, if you want to see a list of your chardonnays, you can
select Varietal and then simply enter 'chard'. This will return a list of all
chardonnays.
You may also have these results sorted on one field. Simply tap on the check box
and select the field from the drop down box.
If you would like to return to the full set of data, tap on Filter On at the
bottom right of the screen.
Changing the Defaults
From the Default menu you may change the values that are listed in the
dropdown boxes when adding data.
For the year, rating and retail costs simply enter the lowest value and then
the highest value that you would like displayed.
For winery, varietal and region you will see a list of the items. Tap on Add
to add an additional item. To delete an item, select it from the list and tap on
Delete. When done making changes tap on Save. Tap on Cancel to return to the
main screen.
If you spend some time customizing these values to your needs in the beginning, you can save
a lot of time when entering data.
Quick Sorts
Under the Sorts menu you will find a few predefined sorts so that you do not
have to use full sort form. You can sort your data quickly by year, winery,
varietal, rating, cost or region. You can also implement this feature by tapping
on the column headers in the grid.
