Senior Solitaire
was designed with senior citizens in mind who may have poor vision or be
in the early stages of dementia or Alzheimers. It would probably also be
suitable for young children or persons with learning disabilities. It features a very simple game with large,
high-contrasting geometric images. It is based on the card game PAIRS
where two cards that are alike are matched. One continues removing pairs
from the layout until there are no more pairs or the game is won. Chances
for winning the game are about 1 in 4.

Notes:
My 'beta tester' is my mother, 87, who has
both poor vision (macular degeneration in one eye) and mid-stage
Alzheimers. Although she cannot play the game without a little help, she
seems to enjoy it.
I got the idea from a friend of mine whose
dad has Alzheimers and likes to play solitaire on his laptop.
Unfortunately my mother, not being of the computer generation, could not
master the concept of the mouse. So I thought that she could much more
easily tap the screen on my Pocket PC. But then of course she could not
easily read the cards on the small screen so I changed the cards to
geometric images and made them as contrasting and as large as possible. I
then figured she would not be able to read any of the items of the menu so
added a big DEAL button to start another game. I also added sound effects and
a flashing
YOU WIN or GAME OVER message at the completion of the game.
